When in Australia this year Sheeran said he and Blunt talked about forming a weddings and funerals band with Christina Perri.
“Blunt and Christina and I could start a Travelling Wilbury’s type band,” Sheeran said. “She does A Thousand Years, he does You’re Beautiful and I do Thinking Out Loud. Then we could do funerals, Blunt could do Goodbye My Lover, I could do Supermarket Flowers.”
Blunt’s continued to workshop the idea and has come up with a name for the trio.
“It’d be called Limp Willy and the Disappointments,” Blunt says. “Ed would obviously be the lead singer in that group. He and I and Ryan Tedder wrote a song called Time Of Our Lives on this album for that band to sing. It’s exactly about that moment of getting married.”
In 2014 Blunt, 43, married Sofia Wellesley, last year they had a son, whose name they have kept private.
In Make Me Better, another Sheeran co-write, Blunt sings “You gave me a child, and he’s got your smile” as well as uncharacteristically personal scenes from their relationship.
“It’s a song I’m uncomfortable with for that reason,” Blunt admits. “Ed said ‘Come on, it’s your job, you veil a lot of things’, for that reason it was great to work with him. He is so open and he dragged me into that space.
“I’m really bad about talking about it. My first album (Back to Bedlam) was very open but I had a lot of press intrusion and I was very uncomfortable about it. I’ve never talked about my private life, but Ed said that’s what a songwriter does, talk about things in an open way. It’s a very, very direct song, there’s no hiding.
“I’m not someone who really hangs out with people in my industry just because they’re famous,” Blunt adds about Sheeran, “but he’s genuinely down to earth and a super nice dude. Make Me Better is a beautiful song and I wouldn’t have got near to writing it without his help, so I’m very grateful and the people the song is about are very grateful too.”
However Blunt continues his mate’s policy of declining to discuss the increasingly mysterious incident involving Princess Beatrice, a sword and a scar on Sheeran’s face.
“I wouldn’t know, I wasn’t there,” Blunt says, laughing. He then adds “It’s probably best not to talk about it any more ...”
Blunt does reveal the late Carrie Fisher was his son’s godmother, and regrets the child won’t get to know the star.
Fisher met Blunt before he made his first album — Goodbye My Lover was recorded in her bathroom.
“We’d run out of money and we couldn’t hire another studio, she had a piano in her bathroom, as you do in Hollywood. She was an amazing woman. Her home was an incredible place that was home to me for a long time. She went way too early but she went when she was back on top as General Leia.”
His tribute to Fisher was one of his few ‘serious’ Tweets in the past year. Blunt’s Twitter feed has seen him not only take the piss out of himself, but win over people who love his tweets but not his music.
“I’m only messing around on it. It’s weird how we take Twitter so seriously. It’s just a weird place where people’s opinions get voiced when they should have kept them to themselves.
“If you look at trolls they’re exactly as you imagine them, miserable people in dark rooms with their trousers around their ankles. Why we should take these people seriously is beyond me. Humans in our jobs all seem to focus on and exaggerate the negative. For musicians, people who turn up to your concert have made a f---load more effort than someone who just sat on the loo tweeting.”
